Made by hand in La Esperanza, Guatemala, by the women who own the workshop. UPAVIM is a self-run cooperative on the outskirts of Guatemala City, founded in 1989 and governed by its own all-women board. Sales of their crafts pay the members' wages and fund a K–6 Montessori school, a daycare, a preschool and a community health clinic, plus a scholarship program that awards around 300 scholarships a year. They have been a Fair Trade Federation member since 1994, which means an outside body has verified all of this, not just the co-op itself.
You are buying a pot holder. You are also buying a small piece of that.
It happens to be a very good pot holder. Shaped like a cow's face, embroidered in detail over a black Ikat pattern, in 100% sustainably sourced cotton that puts a real insulating layer between your hand and a hot cast iron handle. If you cook on cast iron, you already know the particular problem this solves.
Slips on and off, hangs by its loop, and goes in the washing machine when it inevitably meets a pan of bacon fat.
